Kids often ask us,
"Are you famous?" We tell them, "Not in the way you probably mean, but
we're a little bit famous wherever we've been."
This was driven home to us one evening when we ran into a group of
students a short time after visiting their school. The two of us and the driver of the
car they were in were filling up at a local service station. Spotting us, they waved
as though trying to throw their arms from their bodies, fueled by the surprise that
all kids experience upon discovering that their teachers -- and now authors, too!
-- patronize grocery stores and use gasoline in their vehicles. "We go to your
school! We go to your school!" they shouted to us with desperate excitement as
they pulled away.
Kids. They'll give you the school right off their backs.
